Yes, you still need moisturizer if your skin is oily. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says it plainly: although you have oily skin, it is still important to apply moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. The trick isn’t skipping it. It’s picking one that doesn’t feel like a face full of lotion.

That means a gel or light lotion, labeled “oil free” and “noncomedogenic,” and in the morning, one with sunscreen. Easy to say, harder to find in the aisle when every bottle claims to be “lightweight.”

So here’s what to look for, how to use it, and six drugstore moisturizers sorted by when you’d use them. Everything about the products comes from each brand’s own product page, plus the price on the brand’s site in October 2026 where the brand lists one. Nobody here has tested them on your face, and your skin gets the final vote.

Do you really need moisturizer if your skin is oily?

Moisturizer isn’t there to add oil. Its job, per the AAD, is to keep your skin hydrated. Oily skin can still feel tight or look rough when it isn’t.

The same AAD page has a warning that matters here. Lots of people with oily skin reach for a strong face wash to strip the shine, but a wash that is too harsh can irritate your skin and trigger increased oil production. Skipping moisturizer after a squeaky-clean wash is the same mistake in a different order.

What to look for in a moisturizer for oily skin

  • “Oil free” and “noncomedogenic” on the label. The AAD says products with these labels won’t clog your pores or cause acne. Check the cleanser and makeup too.
  • A gel or light lotion texture. These tend to sink in fast and feel lighter than a thick cream. Brands call them “water gel,” “gel cream” or “oil absorbing lotion.” Read the tub: you want the oil-free or noncomedogenic claim, not just a light-sounding name.
  • SPF 30 or higher in the morning. The AAD suggests looking for a moisturizer that also has a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. One step instead of two.
  • Nothing that stings. If a product burns or turns your skin red, it’s the wrong one for you, however popular it is.

The best drugstore moisturizers for oily skin

A note on prices: CeraVe lists a price on its product pages. Neutrogena and Cetaphil don’t show one on theirs, so those cards have no price. Check your store. Where there is a price, it was checked in October 2026.

Light gels for everyday

CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel

Why we like it: a gel with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. CeraVe lists it as oil-free, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic and made for all skin types, and describes the texture as weightless.

$19.99
Price checked Oct 2026. Prices change, we don't.
CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel

Why we like it: CeraVe’s page says it’s made for all skin types including sensitive, oily and combination skin. The brand calls it a dry-touch, weightless water gel, and lists it as oil-free, non-comedogenic and fragrance-free.

$21.99
Price checked Oct 2026. Prices change, we don't.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel

Why we like it: Neutrogena says this one is for normal to oily and combination skin, with hyaluronic acid in an ultra-lightweight gel that “instantly refreshes and cools.” The page I read is the version with signature fragrance, so look at the label if you want fragrance-free.

Morning moisturizers with SPF

Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Absorbing Moisturizer SPF 30

Why we like it: listed by Cetaphil for oily skin. It’s an oil-free lotion with broad-spectrum SPF 30 and MicroPearl technology that the brand says absorbs surface oil and gives a matte finish. Also listed as fragrance-free and won’t clog pores.

Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer with Sunscreen SPF 35

Why we like it: broad-spectrum SPF 35 in an oil-free, non-comedogenic, fragrance-free lotion. Cetaphil says it leaves a matte, satin finish without a greasy residue, and calls it ideal for sensitive, combination skin.

A night pick

CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion

Why we like it: no SPF, so it’s for after dark. CeraVe calls it a lightweight, oil-free, non-comedogenic lotion with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, made for all skin types. Its own page adds that even oily skin needs moisture around the clock.

$19.99
Price checked Oct 2026. Prices change, we don't.

Not on the list: CeraVe’s AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30. CeraVe’s page says it’s made for normal to dry skin, which is the opposite of what this post is about.

How to use moisturizer when your skin is oily

  1. Wash first, gently. The AAD suggests a gentle, foaming face wash up to twice a day and after sweating. Skip oil-based or alcohol-based cleansers.
  2. Moisturize right after. The AAD’s advice is to apply moisturizer after cleansing. Cetaphil’s directions say to do it while your skin is still damp.
  3. Use a regular amount, not a glob. If your face feels slick ten minutes later, use less next time.
  4. Mornings: SPF 30 or higher. Either a moisturizer with SPF in it, or a separate sunscreen on top.
  5. Midday shine: blot, don’t scrub. The AAD suggests blotting papers: press one on your face for a few seconds to absorb oil.
  6. Nights: take your makeup off. The AAD says don’t sleep in it.

Other oily-skin habits worth stealing from the AAD

Moisturizer is one piece. The AAD’s oily skin page has a few more that cost nothing:

  • Keep your hands off your face. Touching it all day adds to the problem.
  • Don’t sleep in makeup. Even the lightest foundation.
  • Pick water-based, matte makeup over oil-based formulas.
  • Check your cleanser too. The AAD says to avoid oil-based or alcohol-based ones.

When oily skin comes with breakouts

Oily skin and acne often show up together, and a moisturizer won’t treat acne by itself. If you’re getting pimples, start with how to get clear skin, and read benzoyl peroxide vs salicylic acid before buying anything with an acne ingredient in it.

The AAD’s rule of thumb: if you keep getting breakouts after following the basics, partner with a board-certified dermatologist. Ask a parent to book it. Going isn’t overreacting.

Questions people ask

Do you need moisturizer if you have oily skin?
Yes. The AAD says that although you have oily skin, it’s still important to apply moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Look for one labeled oil-free and noncomedogenic.
What is the best face moisturizer for oily skin?
There isn’t one winner, but there are filters. Look for oil-free, noncomedogenic, a gel or light lotion, and SPF 30 or higher for the morning. From the brands’ own pages, CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel and Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Absorbing Moisturizer SPF 30 both list oily skin as who they’re for.
Is gel or cream moisturizer better for oily skin?
Gels and light lotions tend to feel lighter, which is why they’re popular with oily skin. What matters most is the label: oil-free and noncomedogenic, according to the AAD.
Should I use a moisturizer with SPF if my skin is oily?
The AAD suggests a moisturizer that also contains broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. If you use a separate sunscreen instead, a plain oil-free moisturizer underneath works too.
Can moisturizer make oily skin worse?
Products labeled oil-free and noncomedogenic are made not to clog pores, per the AAD. If a moisturizer makes you break out or feel greasy, switch to a lighter one, and patch test the next one first.
