How to ask questions without it feeling like an interview
A list of questions can turn into a pop quiz fast. A few habits keep it feeling like a real conversation:
- Answer your own question. After they answer, tell them yours. A conversation goes both ways.
- Ask a follow-up. “Wait, why?” and “How did you get into that?” are the two best questions ever invented.
- Listen for the thing to ask next. If they mention a sister, a sport or a show, ask about that instead of jumping to the next question on your list.
- Don’t fire off five in a row. One question, a real answer, then let it go wherever it goes.
- Let people pass. If they don’t want to answer, say “no worries” and move on. That’s how people learn you’re safe to talk to.

How do you keep the conversation going after the questions?
Questions get you started. What keeps things going is curiosity about the answers.
- Find the overlap. If you both like the same show, band or sport, you’ve got a topic that can last all week.
- Remember what they said. Bringing it up later (“Did your game go okay?”) shows you were listening, and that’s what makes people want to talk to you again.
- Switch to doing things. Talking is easier when you’re doing something together. Our list of This or That questions and would you rather questions turns a stalled chat into a game.
- Be okay with silence. A few quiet seconds is normal, not a failure.
If starting conversations makes you nervous in general, it’s a skill you can build. Here’s how to make new friends, and what to do if you tend to feel awkward around people you don’t know.
Questions to skip with someone you just met
Getting to know someone is a slow build. Some topics are better saved until you’ve built trust, or left alone unless they bring them up:
- Anything about their body, weight or looks.
- Their family problems, money or health.
- Past relationships and breakups.
- Gossip about other people.
If they open up about something heavy on their own, listen first. You don’t have to fix anything.
