How to Tell Your Crush You Like Them (In Person or Over Text)
Word-for-word scripts for in person and over text, what not to do and how to handle a yes, a maybe or a no.

In this guide
You’ve liked them for weeks, maybe months. You’ve analyzed every text and every look. And now you’re stuck between “I have to tell them” and “I would literally rather move to another state.”
Here’s how to tell your crush you like them, in person or over text, with words you can actually use, plus how to handle whatever they say back.
Before you tell them
Get to know them a little first
It’s much easier to tell someone you like them if you already talk sometimes. If you’ve barely spoken, start with how to talk to your crush and build from there.
Look for signs, but don’t wait for proof
Do they text back, start conversations, remember things you said? Those are good signs. Here are more signs someone likes you. But you’ll never be 100% sure, and that’s okay. Telling them is how you find out.
Decide what you want
Do you want to go out? Hang out more? Or just get it off your chest? Knowing helps you say it clearly. If you’re already kind of together but nothing’s official, read what a situationship is first.
In person or over text?
Both are fine. In person feels braver and you can see their reaction. Text gives both of you time to think, and it’s easier if you get really nervous. Pick the one you’ll actually do.
What to say in person
Find a moment when it’s just the two of you and nobody’s rushed: walking out of class, after practice, at the end of a hangout. Keep it short and simple.
What to text
Pick a normal time, like an evening, and send it when you’re already talking, so it doesn’t come totally out of nowhere.
Then put your phone down. Seriously. Waiting for “typing…” is torture. Go do something else.
What not to do
- Don’t do a huge public gesture. A big scene puts them on the spot.
- Don’t ask a friend to tell them for you. It turns into gossip fast.
- Don’t text “can I tell you something?” and then wait an hour. Just say it.
- Don’t over-explain. One or two sentences are enough. You don’t need a speech.
If they say yes
Amazing. Suggest something easy and specific: a walk, food, a game, a movie with friends (more cute date ideas here). Keep it relaxed, and keep being yourself. Running out of things to say? Try these questions to ask your crush.
If they say “I don’t know” or need time
Give it to them. “Totally fine, no rush” is the best answer. Then act normal. Pushing for an answer usually makes it a no.
If they say no
It’s going to sting. Try to say something like “Okay, thanks for being honest. I’m glad I told you.” Then walk away with your head up. You were brave, and that’s not nothing.
Give it some time before you try to be friends again, and lean on your friends in the meantime. Here’s how to get over a crush who doesn’t like you back.
