Signs a Guy Likes You (Even When He’s Trying Hard Not to Show It)

He laughs at the joke that wasn't funny and suddenly needs help with the homework he already did. Here's how to read the signs without overthinking every text.

You’ve replayed the conversation four times. He said “see you tomorrow,” which could mean he likes you, or could mean that tomorrow is a school day. We get it.

No single sign proves anything. Some people are friendly with everyone, and some get awkward and quiet around the person they like most. What tells you more is a pattern: several of the signs below, showing up again and again, mostly with you.

Signs he likes you in person

1. He finds you in a crowded room

In class, in the cafeteria, at a party, he knows where you are. You catch him looking, he looks away fast, and five minutes later it happens again. One glance means nothing. A habit of glances means something.

2. He makes up reasons to talk to you

He asks what page the homework was on (he knows). He borrows a pen he doesn’t need. He asks about the test you both took. These small excuses are how a lot of shy people start a conversation without risking a real one.

3. He remembers small things you said

You mentioned your dog’s name once, two weeks ago, and he asks how she’s doing. People remember what they care about. This is one of the more reliable signs on this list.

4. He acts different around you

Louder and funnier when you walk up, or suddenly quiet and clumsy. Either one counts. What matters is that he isn’t the same around you as he is with everyone else. Ask a friend who knows him if they’ve noticed it too.

5. He turns his body toward you

When you talk in a group, his feet and shoulders point your way, and he leans in when you speak. People tend to face what holds their attention. It’s subtle, but once you notice it, you’ll see it everywhere.

6. He laughs at jokes that weren’t that funny

Be honest: was it really that funny? If he laughs a little too hard at your jokes, and only yours, he’s probably trying to show you he’s on your side.

7. His friends act weird when you’re around

They smirk, nudge him, or suddenly leave the two of you alone. Friends usually know first, and they are terrible at hiding it.

Signs he likes you over text

8. He starts conversations

If you always text first, look at that. If he messages you first, even with something random like a meme or a “did you see that?”, he’s thinking about you when you’re not around.

9. He keeps the chat going

One-word answers kill a conversation. Questions keep it alive. If he asks you things back and the chat goes on later than it needs to, he wants to keep talking.

10. He reacts to your stories and posts

Watching every story isn’t proof. Replying to them is a better sign, because it opens a conversation he chose to start.

11. He texts about nothing

“What are you doing” at 9 p.m. on a Tuesday has no purpose except talking to you. That’s the point.

Signs he likes you but is hiding it

Some guys work hard not to show it, usually because they’re scared of rejection or of being teased. Watch for these:

  • He teases you, but nicely. Light, friendly teasing that makes you laugh can be a way to get your attention. Teasing that makes you feel small is a different thing. That’s a red flag, not a crush.
  • He asks your friends about you. If your best friend says he asked whether you’re going to the game, that’s a big one.
  • He gets jealous, then pretends he didn’t. He goes quiet when you mention another guy, then changes the subject.
  • He’s nervous one on one. Easy and funny in a group, awkward when it’s just you two. Nerves are a good sign here.

Crush or just friendly?

This part isn’t always fun, but it saves a lot of overthinking. Green flags point to a crush. Red flags usually mean he sees you as a friend.

Green flags
  • He treats you the way he treats you, not the way he treats everyone
  • He makes plans with you, not only when he’s bored
  • He follows through when he says he’ll do something
Red flags
  • He talks to you about the girl he likes
  • He’s this friendly with everyone, in exactly the same way
  • He only texts you late at night or when he needs something

How to find out for sure

Signs only get you so far. If you want a real answer, you have three honest options:

  1. Spend more time together. Suggest something low pressure in a group, like getting food after practice. See if he makes an effort to talk to you.
  2. Give him an opening. Mention a movie you want to see and see if he says “we should go.” Make it easy for him to say yes.
  3. Just ask. It’s scary, and it also ends the guessing in one conversation.

If you want to ask
Ok random question. Do you like me as more than a friend? Totally fine if not, I’d rather know than keep guessing lol
Casual, easy to answer either way

Need something to talk about? Here are questions to ask your crush that aren’t cringe.

Questions people ask

What are the biggest signs a guy likes you?
He finds reasons to talk to you, remembers small things you said, acts different around you than around other people, and starts conversations over text. One sign alone means little. Several, often and mostly with you, mean a lot more.
How do you know if a shy guy likes you?
Shy guys show it with nerves instead of big moves: quick glances, getting quieter or clumsy when you walk up, asking your friends about you, or texting more confidently than they talk in person.
Does staring mean he likes you?
It can. Catching him looking at you more than once, and him looking away fast, is a common sign of interest. Some people just zone out, though, so look for other signs too.
Should I ask him if he likes me?
If guessing is making you anxious, yes. Keep it casual and give him an easy way to answer either way. Whatever he says, you’ll stop wasting energy on decoding his texts.
