The 5 a.m. “that girl” morning routines online look amazing. Journaling, a workout, a smoothie, a 12-step skincare routine. Then real life happens: your alarm goes off at 6:40 and the bus comes at 7:15.

Here’s a morning routine for school that actually fits in 30 minutes, plus the 10-minute version for days when you hit snooze one too many times.

The real secret: the night before

A calm morning starts the evening before. Five minutes before bed saves you fifteen frantic ones in the morning:

  • Pick your outfit, shoes included. Check the weather app.
  • Pack your bag and put it by the door: homework, laptop, charger, gym clothes, anything that needs signing.
  • Plan breakfast. Even if it’s just “granola bar and a banana.”
  • Charge your phone across the room, so you have to get up to turn off the alarm.

And then actually go to sleep. The CDC says teens need 8 to 10 hours a night, and in 2025 only about 1 in 4 high schoolers got even 8 on school nights. No routine can fix a morning after five hours of sleep.

A 30-minute morning routine for school

0:00 Get up (2 minutes)

Turn off the alarm across the room. Open the curtains or turn on the light right away. Bright light helps you feel awake faster.

0:02 Bathroom and water (5 minutes)

Bathroom, brush your teeth, drink a glass of water.

0:07 Wash your face and skincare (5 minutes)

Dark circles even after a full night’s sleep? Here’s why they show up and what helps.

Morning skincare only needs three steps: a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. Here’s our 3-step skincare routine for teens.

0:12 Get dressed (5 minutes)

Easy, because you picked it last night.

0:17 Hair and anything else (5 minutes)

Brush, a ponytail, deodorant, a little makeup if you wear it. Find a “default” hairstyle you can do in two minutes for busy mornings.

0:22 Breakfast (6 minutes)

Eat something, even if it’s small. Fast options: toast with peanut butter, yogurt and granola, a banana and a cheese stick, overnight oats you made the night before.

0:28 Final check (2 minutes)

Phone, keys, bag, lunch, water bottle. Then out the door.

The 10-minute version (for bad mornings)

Overslept? Skip everything that isn’t essential:

  1. Teeth and deodorant (2 minutes)
  2. Splash your face, sunscreen (1 minute)
  3. Get dressed in last night’s outfit (3 minutes)
  4. Ponytail or hat (1 minute)
  5. Grab breakfast to eat on the way (2 minutes)
  6. Bag by the door, go (1 minute)

This is why the night-before list matters. With it, oversleeping is a fast morning. Without it, it’s a disaster.

What to skip on school mornings

  • Scrolling in bed. “Just checking my phone” turns into 20 minutes. Keep it out of reach until you’re dressed. More on how to stop doomscrolling.
  • Deciding what to wear. Do it the night before.
  • Snooze. Set the alarm for when you actually need to get up, not 30 minutes earlier.
  • Anything you don’t actually enjoy. If the 10-step routine makes you late every day, it’s not working.

Questions people ask

What is a good morning routine for school?
Get up when your alarm goes off, brush your teeth and drink water, wash your face and put on sunscreen, get dressed in an outfit you picked the night before, do your hair, eat a quick breakfast and check your bag. It fits in about 30 minutes.
What time should a teenager wake up for school?
Count back from when you have to leave: about 30 minutes for your routine plus a short buffer. Then set your bedtime 8 to 10 hours before that, since that’s how much sleep teens need.
How can I get ready for school faster?
Do as much as possible the night before: pick your outfit, pack your bag, plan breakfast and charge your phone across the room. Then keep your phone away until you’re dressed.
